This table does not tell you where you should save. It shows what each account leaves you with under your assumptions, based on the advertised rates on the update date. Rates are variable and banks can change tiers and terms without notice.

Questions and answers

How do you calculate the final amount?

We deposit the starting amount at the beginning and the monthly savings at the start of each month. We convert each account's advertised annual rate into an effective annual rate based on how often it credits interest, and apply the equivalent monthly rate in the calculation. This approximates the actual crediting.

With capital gains tax deducted, 22% is withheld from interest and indexation every month, so less remains to compound. The tax-free allowance on interest income is not included.

What does interest crediting mean?

Interest crediting is how often interest is added to the account. The frequency can affect compound interest. In this comparison we convert rates into the equivalent monthly rate and apply it every month.

How does the loyalty programme work?

Loyalty rates are not a mark-up on every account but separate accounts tied to your tier at your bank (Stig 1 to 3 and Premía at Arion, Klettur to Tindur at Íslandsbanki, Vild 2 and Vild 3 at Landsbankinn). Choose your tier under the assumptions and only the loyalty rates you qualify for appear.

What do the rate tiers mean?

Many accounts pay a higher rate the larger the balance. We show the rate for your balance at the start, and the calculation follows the balance up the tiers if it crosses a threshold during the period. Open a row to see the full tier table.

Why are indexed accounts in the same table?

To make indexed and non-indexed accounts comparable, we convert real rates to nominal using your inflation assumption. The default is the latest CPI reading; you can change it under the assumptions. Rates on indexed accounts are shown as nominal rates including inflation where possible, otherwise as real rates.

What if I need the money sooner?

Accounts with a lock-in or notice period longer than the period you chose drop out of the list automatically. That is why fewer options remain when you shorten the period.

Are the rates up to date?

The rates are the banks' advertised rates as last verified. The date is shown at the bottom of the table. Rates are variable and banks can change tiers and terms without notice.
